"One..." Cold air rushed past the brown fur and clothing wiping away the sweat. Falling in his sleep his back to the ground he can see the sky through his half shut eyes. Free in the world of feeling the last of his breath exhales through his lips leaving a trail of warmth where he once was.
"Two..." Blue, blue was the world, slowly fading into darker dusty colors. "Three..." Yellow for the light that pierces the world forty-five to the west. "Four..." The slow intake of cold into the body, but not a numbing cold but a life filling cold. "Five..." Falling falling falling, a pit that is dropping in his stomach. He could feel it, everything was raising, or was if falling? "Six..." Feeling returns, the push of the wind to the back, the rush of flight. "Seven..." The beating of the chest, the rush to the head. The spin to face the fear. "Eight..." Time to pull, but what? "Nine..." The movement of the hand reaching to his chest. Gripping a right with a cord attached. Time to pull... "Ten." The familiar tug, the slowing, feeling of hanging...
It took a few more seconds before Cody came to. He was laying on his stomach in the dirt when he opened his eyes. He began to cough a bit getting, his lungs were just beginning to work from seconds of not breathing. He pushed himself up a little and fell back to a sitting position. He let his head relax looking up while he caught his breath. He slowly unbuckled his harness and took off the backpack carrying his parachute. He sat for a moment letting feeling regretfully return to his weary body. He slowly stood up and took a few more steps closer to the edge of a hole in the middle of a ruins. What were once great structures and temples now lay in rubble around this one hole in the ground. The sun was getting ready to set in an hour, maybe two.
"Welcome back to the living Mr. Taylor." The voice was a sweet female in Cody's head.
"Well thank you Sierra, good to have you back as well. But didn't we have this talk before? I told you to just call me Cody, but I guess military protocol comes first for formal meetings huh?" Cody sighed while sizing down the length of the hole. He could just make out the alter he recognized Tails visited not much more than an hour ago.
"Glad to be back, it's been rather boring in a data disk without your dirty mind to keep me occupied for the past year or so" Sierra stated playfully.
"Yeah yeah, I guess they at least stuck me with an A.I. I don't mind having in my head all the time. Ready to keep me alive again then?"
"Oh aren't I always? So, you're gonna jump then?" Cody smiled inwardly.
"Is there any other way?" With that he strapped on a gauntlet to his left forearm and pointed it to the ground. He flexed his hand inward and a hook with a wire attached shot into the ground. Cody tugged to test if the line was secure then took a jump into the hole. The line slowed his descent and he landed on his feet with a soft thud. He relaxed a little in his arm and the line rewound and after a few seconds slipped back into the gauntlet. He looked around a bit in the darkness before unholstering his pistol with a flashlight attached to it. He turned the flashlight on as well as the one on his shoulder and looked around slightly. He proceeded towards a tent with the Tricell logo on it and entered. Inside it was connected to a wall with a door in the middle. He pulled the handle down and gave it a tug. He pointed his gun into the darkness of the hallway. There was a table on the right with a journal laying on it. Cody stepped up to it and opened it to a page near the end.
"Chief Researcher Brandon. - 1966,
Dec, 4
Mr. Spencer once spoke of a flower called the Stairway to the Sun. Supposedly this flower would give the person who consumed it incredible abilities. Everyone thought it was nothing more than a rumor or a legend that Mr. Spencer was telling us, but later research would prove us wrong. The first person to recognize the validity of that story was my teacher, Dr. James Marcus. He hypothesized that a virus, hereto unknown, might exist that could alter DNA.
The man was so perspicacious!
His hypothesis turned out to be correct! The virus discovered in that flower was labeled "progenitor." For three months in Africa we worked diligently, fretted over results, and staved off attacks from Ndipaya. After such time, our efforts were finally rewarded. Even Dr. Marcus, who until yesterday looked exhausted, was in good spirits. He wants to return home as soon as possible to delve deeper into his research.
I feel the same way. I want to learn the secrets of this Progenitor virus as soon as possible." Cody flipped the page. Many seemed to be missing or perhaps the journal was never updated often.
"1967 feb. 12
We've hit the metaphorical brick wall. We brought the Progenitor flower back from Africa and attempted to cultivate it here. The initial culture samples of the Progenitor virus have not shown DNA-altering characteristics. We cultivated the flowers to mass-produce the Progenitor virus.
At first, everything proceeded smoothly. The plants were strong, and grew quickly. In a short amount of time they flowered. But here is when a major problem surfaced! The flowers did not contain the Progenitor virus! Perhaps the environment in which they're grown triggers the development of the virus. This matter must be investigated further." Again Cody turned the page.
"March 23
We've made no progress. We've tried cultivating the flower under different conditions, but with no luck in triggering development of the virus itself. Thus far we have tried changing the soil, water, temperature, and light exposure all with no success. I got into a heated debate with Dr. Marcus about the direction this research was taking. During that debate, Mr. Spencer interjected some foolhardy notion of starting a company. Without the progenitor virus there's no point in starting a company. Does he not see that? It's all pointless!" He turned the page again.
"1958 April 15
It's been over a year since we've had any breakthroughs. That's why Dr. Marcus and I have decided to return to Africa. We can no longer continue our research without the progenitor virus. I know those routine attacks by the Ndipaya are really going to wrack my nerves, but for the sake of our research, I will persevere. In the face of my foreseen dismay it was Mr. Spencer who provided the answer.
"if you're worried about the Ndipaya, then we'll just have to remove them from the equation."
I can only imagine the look of shock on our faces. The idea never occurred to us. It was quite an atypical solotuion to our problem, but it seemed to be the only option available. Dr. Marcus and I decided to try Mr. Spencer's plan."
Aug. 19
Finally, some good news! We learned they were able to chase the Ndipaya off their land. The land we acquired only amounts to half of those underground ruins, but if it includes the area where the Progenitor flower grows, then there should be no issues. Mr. Specner said his plans to construct researhc facilities at the site, which will expedite our research into the virus. We hastily made our preparations to depart for Africa, but Mr. Spencer requested that Dr. Marcus stay in Raccoon City to take of the Training Center. We were initially taken back by this request, but we soon realized it was the logical course of action. Dr. Marcus needs a calm environment to properly conduct his research. If he were in Africa, there would be no proper facility for him the use at this time. I just hope the African research facilities get built soon. So now I will go alone to Africa and send back samples of the Progenitor virus to Dr. Marcus. Both Dr. marcus and Mr. Spencer agree this is the best course of action. I have to start making preparations to go. I have a feeling I'll be pretty busy starting tomorrow."
"Sept. 29
I've been in African for two weeks now. It's a good thing Dr. Marcus isn't here. This place is far from being a paradise of research and scientific study. The so-called research facilities are nothing more then a bunch of tents, and we have to employ armed soldiers to keep the Ndipaya at bay. But the thing that gets on my nerves the most is the sound of the construction for the real research facilities. How am I suppose to concentrate on research when everything is threatening to drive me insane? I'm trying to just concentrate on extracting virus samples from the Progenitor flower so I can send them to Dr. Marcus. Hopefully, if I focus on my work, I can remain sane in this godforsaken place."
"1969- June 15
The research facilities are finally completed! This is the real Umbrella Africa Research Center, not just some pile of tents. But I've come to a realization in the past nine months. The facilities are too small for our needs. We need to make them larger, more suitable for research. Then we can fill them with more talented researchers. This place needs to be our frontline in our Progenitor virus research. Our results will do a great service to Dr. Marcus and his viral research. In a rare turn of events, that old skinflint Spencer actually agreed with me on this!"
"1998 November 16
We've closed down the Resarch Center. It's strange, but I don't really care. I'm indifferent to the whole thing. I feel the same way as when I heard that the Arklay facility and Raccoon City were destroyed. When did I become so apathetic? I've spent every waking moment researching and extracting the Progenitor virus. Everything I did was for Dr. Marcus. Actually, when I think about it, I probably stopped caring the day I heard he had died all those years ago. I didn't feel angry or happy or even shocked; I just felt nothing at all. It was as if all my emotions just shut down. I just kept sending out samples of the Progenitor virus to all of Umbrella's laboratories. I was just an automated machine reporting to Umbrella Headquarters every time one of my subordinates made a breakthrough or discovered something new. I was like a zombie ambling through life. No thoughts, no feelings. And now the research Center where I've spent half my life is closed. I really don't care one way or another. It's probably all for the best. Perhaps it is too late to have any semblance of a life again."
Cody closed the end of the journal and blinked a few times letting his vision return to normal. He shook his head a bit pondering what he read. "So, this sheds some light on why they took interest in Cosmo. They were having problems reproducing the virus elsewhere, and what better than a plant that gives off multidimensional signals?"
"My records are incomplete of this world. Perhaps I may suggest I interface with a computer, I can detect power sources are still running in the building in certain areas. If you could find a computer perhaps it can help shed some light on whats been going on." Cody sighed
"Yes I think there is one in the next room. I pray those monsters all took off after them. Would make my job a lot easier." Cody proceeded down the hallway into the room ahead. The door opened easily and with it the stench of a rotting body. Cody gagged lightly and coughed a few times. He entered the room and saw the computer that was still alive. He jiggled the mouse a little and it switched to the main desktop screen. He sighed a little and undid his pony tail reaching his hand to his scalp. He pressed on a spot with no feeling and out slid a small chip with his companion on it. He slid it into the computer and it hummed to life.
"Wow the processor on this thing is junk! At least I can help, and goody it has internet access. It will take a little while but I will learn all I can. Please be patient Cody I'll be back soon." Cody sighed and sat down in the chair and closed his eyes. His nose stung with the smell of rotting flesh in the room. He tried his best to ignore it as his ears twitches searching for noises. He could hear distantly in the air conditioning ducts movement. It was far enough away and he questioned the senses of the creatures. After a few moments he heard Sierra speaking into his head again.
"I'm done now, you may retrieve me. I'll give you the short version now and I'll tell you the rest later."
"Fair enough" Cody retrieved the device and replaced it into his head and redid his ponytail. He began to move throughout the facility trying to make his way to an elevator. Sierra already set him on his way and calculated an intercept route for the group ahead.
"In the past few years there are a few recorded disasters that have led to outbreaks in various places. One of these recorded "Disasters" is near Raccoon city. There have been reports of abductions in the area and a team codenamed S.T.A.R.S. Or Special Tactics and Rescue Services; investigated. An advance team was sent to a believed location of the disappeared persons. Contact was soon lost and another team was sent to investigate. The squad was led by Albert Wesker, and Chris Redfield was a member of that squad. They encountered Biological weapons and most of the team including Albert Wesker were killed in action. Shortly after an outbreak of a virus occurred in Raccoon city. The dead started to walk and consume living humans and therefore turning them into living dead. Soon the entire city was consumed with only two recorded survivors. Leon Kennedy, and Claire Redfield; Chris Redfield's sister. There was another incident nearby with another two survivors, who's names are not listed that I could find with the time I had. A while after that the president of the United States of America had his daughter kidnapped. Agent Kennedy was sent to investigate and wound up in Spain. In his report he noted that the people there were infected not by a virus but by a parasite. The parasites DNA was retrieved by an unknown source and is presumed to have been taken to Umbrella." Cody nodded as he turned each corner in the darkness carefully nearing the elevator.
"As for more recent events, files containing data humanoid and plantlike DNA have been shown in enhancing the parasite and transferring the primary virus from the Raccoon City Incident to be selective. It appears that combined with the parasite it creates a self thinking parasite looking for a host to bind with. If it finds a proper host then it will bind with it giving the host super human abilities and control over the parasite. But if the host does not meet the parasite, the parasite kills the host taking the body for itself to consume until it finds a proper host. That is all the data I could compile Cody, perhaps later I may analyze more and create a full report."
"Perhaps we will do that. But here we are the elevator." Cody pressed the button and it hummed to life. "Anything about those creatures?" The elevator opened up and Cody stepped in pressing a button to ascend into the mountainside. It would connect to the huge human livestock storage several hundred floors above the group ahead of him about where they should be offloading and moving deeper into the facility.
"Yes, as for weaknesses they have an exposed heart but since they crawl on all fours it may be hard to get to. Also their senses are fairly weak besides their sense of smell. It also seems there was no survival rate of test subjects to the labeled "Lickers" due to heavy scenting in the room. They apparently have a very hypersensitive nose but not as a weakness. A note of danger is, they always hunt in packs."
"Thanks I'll keep that in mind. We should be arriving shortly. When we are in the holding area see if you cant interface with their implants so I will show up as friendly and will be able to speak with them." The elevator began to slow a few minutes later and came to a halt. The elevator opened and Cody proceeded into the area in front of him. Sierra relayed that she established contact. Cody smiled and began to speak into his headset.
"I thought you could use a little backup. I ain't much but hey, I'm better than nothing. The name is Cody, I'm about two-hundred stories above you. See you in a few seconds." He chuckled again and approached the edge of the chasm below him.
"Glad to have you on board, but this thing is so slow you may be waiting for a while." He heard Chris say. Chris sounded slightly dishearted and Cody knew why. His toes were over the edge already and his weight pushing him over.
"So, You're going to jump then?" Sierra asked.
"Is there any other way?" Cody began to fall forward into the abyss.
